Random Funny Things My Kids Say - Part 12

Da Man was in a particularly foul mood the other day and yelling at the kids for any perceived disrespect. In fact, he even went so far as to ban them from playing with their barbie dolls. This I did not understand. Ban TV, ban computer and all other electronic devices, ok - I get it. But to ban creative free play with their dolls and dollhouses? I'm not sure I would agree. So I had 3 mopey girls sitting on the couch next to me commenting on their daddy's bad mood.

Oldest - Boy is he cranky.

Youngest - No he is really really angry.

Angus - He's Crangery!

Oldest - Crangery? That sounds like a drink! A yummy drink!

Angus - NO! It's a Daddy drink. And it tastes really really sour and you make a sour angry face. (Angus makes said face. They all begin to giggle madly.)

Oldest- No when you drink it, it tastes real bad like horrible medicine and makes you want to throw up.

Youngest - No it tastes like throw up!

Angus - No it tastes like diarrhea!

The conversation has now been reduced, as usual, to disgusting bodily functions.

Me - That's enough! Stop with all that disgusting potty talk! I mean it.

Quiet for a few minutes, then the whispering begins.

Youngest - Mommy is crangery too.

Oldest - No that's a Daddy word, we have to find a new word for Mommy.

Angus (starts giggling) - She looks real mad and she's definitely cranky. She's Manky!

All 3 burst out laughing and start chanting "Manky Mommy! Manky Mommy!"

You know, I think I would rather be called Crangery. Manky sounds vaguely obscene.

In other news, Da Man is definitely in my good lists again as he managed to finish reading my manuscript in less than a week, a new reading record for him. To top it off, he gave me probably one of the best compliments I have ever received. He said that when he finished it he felt the same mixed emotion of regret and anticipation he had after watching the first of the Lord of the Rings movies. Regret that it was finished and excited anticipation to know there would be two more coming. I was actually quite moved by his comment. It is hands down the nicest thing he has ever said to me. I am verklempt!

You're not wrong about manky! It is a word that is used in common parlance on this side of the pond. The definition is

manky (context, UK, Ireland, slang) unpleasant, Unpleasantly dirty and disgusting.

The kids, on the other hand, nailed the definition! LOL!

But you are definitely not manky. Although Da Man does sound rather crangery. But well done him for reading the MS. Sounds like you've get a winner here!

Agree with Janey. If you don't smell, then you are probably not manky.

good on da man!

Yeah, manky's too close to skanky, I think. Cool on the compliment from Da Man, though. :)

Awww. What a great blurb from Da Man!

Manky sounds kind of nasty to me. Almost perverted. oh .. she's manky.

Okay I'm weird.

Your kids never fail to crack me up. Ha!

What a NICE compliment from Da Man! Wow. That should give you the motivation to tackle the agent hunt!

LOL! I definitely do not want to drink any crangery because it sounds nasty.

Manky? I agree with Trav - sounds a bit perverted. :D

Your girls are a never - ending fountain of giggles and they crack me up.

I'm glad Da Man came through and read the manuscript and paid you a very well deserved compliment. YAY!

How could Da Man be called "Crangery" after his reaction and praise of your WIP?!

Congrats to Da Man for getting back on your good side...your unManky side. ;)

I love the stuff you put up about what your kids say. I remember when mine were cute like that...before they became teenagers...urgh!

I hear that they eventually become normal again...least that's what I keep hearing. So I'm hoping.

I like the new look on your blog too.

My baby does the Manky manky. hum, that just doesn't sound quite right.

Banned from Barbies? That sounds like a punishment designed to make them like Barbies more.

your trio of girls crack me up! and yay for da man pulling through and what a terrific compliment! no writer could ask for better!

Conduit said...

No, you definitely don't want to be manky. Though your poo/fart fixation is a little manky. The word actually has a verb form where I come from. Farts mank. Or they can be mankin'.

Janeyv's right: we use 'manky' here in the South Pacific as well.

And I'm glad you got the good review!!

I don't know what's funnier, the conversation between your girls (I can totally picture them just feeding off each other!), or the fact that "Manky" is an actual word used as a potty descriptor!

Sarah Hina said...

I'm glad Da Man is back in your good graces. That was a tremendous compliment he paid. I hope he got some good lovin'. ;)

And once again, I love your girls! They deserve to be published, too.

Two things -

Your girls are a scream- and so creative! Wonder where they got that, huh???

And...your husband sounds like a sweetie- even when he's being crangery - which actually sounds quite refreshing - like a cranberry and tangerine drink laced, with expensive vodka.

I so enjoy reading your 'kids say the darndest things' episodes.
And I discovered 'Manky' at the Maui Writers Conference with the Australian Writers- they have such GREAT words!

pjd said...

Ha! Da' Man scores twice in this episode. Most obviously for the manuscript lie^H^H^Hpraise, then also for taking away the "creative free play" of the dolls in order to force the girls to come up with real creative play.

I'm hoping he's off the crutches now and back on the pitch.

Ello: That photo of you is spectacular! Lovely and intriguing image (like the girl herself!) Did Da Man take da pic? At least he's good for something. lol

Good for you, getting a compliment like that, and I can well imagine how you feel! On the rare occasions my husband praises whatever I write, I am over the moon, he tends to be such a hard-ass.

Too bad you can't tell an agent this, though. "My husband liked it" just doesn't cut it, much to my sorrow. If they only knew...

(I'll be reading very soon, too, after a few issues here are dealt with!)

LOL - love those kids of yours.
We use manky here too - and yep, same definition as Jane gave - and you are so not manky, doll.
And what a wonderful comment from Da Man. Yeah!
Now come on, hurry up and get published so we can all read it and be filled the same feeling as Da Man.

Wow, Ello, I LOVE the new look of your blog! Excellent! (though at first I thought I made a mistake...) Your picture is beautiful!

I love your kids! :-)

Hats off to Da Man - what a wonderful compliment. Bravo, Ello!
